So... Why Should You?
Because sadly (or not, depending on your religious and philosophical views), I am slightly poor. (Most) bills get paid, everyone in my apartment eats every day, and life is good. In fact, a big part of why I bike to work is due to my lack of funds.
Even though bicycles are a lot less expensive (and funner!) to own and operate than motorized vehicles, they are not cheap-as-free. Tires pop, chains wear out, stuff breaks. I take a ferry across the Elizabeth River twice a day, six times a week and even though a 30-day ferry pass keeps costs down, it's still $30 a month.
Right now the big things I need are "bad" weather clothing and a messenger bag. "Bad" weather (rain, coldness, snow) clothes because it's going to get cold soon, and after five years of living in the heart of Arizona I have no protective clothing. A messenger bag because the backpack I currently use to schlep my change of clothes and food around in is inadequate. It traps an ass-load of heat and sweat, doesn't carry things like it should, and is not even water resistant.
Donating gets you multiple things. A big thank you post on both of my blogs (complete with or without a message of your choice), the chance to have a sticker/patch/etc of your choosing on my person while I commute, and the satisfaction and good karma that comes from helping a person do something good for themselves and the environment.
