you can always ride with really big headphones draped around your neck. please keep away from those earbuds, though.

Hmm, good idea. I'll have to find some cheapies.
I have been considering this but I'd want to see how loud it was first.
And nah, they don't care if I'm a bit late. Pretty lax environment, luckily.
Some of the best miles I've ever ridden were across Iowa, with a boom box strapped to a BOB trailer behind my bike. Of course, I was on vacation, too.
